UNCONVENTIONAL CLINICIAN

Shifting the mental health paradigm to illuminate

biological drivers of psychiatric symptoms.

THOUGHTFUL SUPPORT FOR COMPLEX LIVES

Mission, Vision & Purpose

Unconventional Clinician is a consulting, education, and advocacy platform founded by Nikki Hammonds, LCSW.

The platform advances an integrative, systems-aware approach to behavioral health—bridging clinical insight, biology, lived experience, and policy to challenge conventional models of care and expand how complex symptoms are understood and addressed.

For many families, including my own—the missing piece isn’t always more therapy. It’s understanding why symptoms developed in the first place. Working at the intersection of mental, physical, and spiritual health, Unconventional Clinician recognizes that siloed systems are often disjointed and difficult to understand. Unconventional Clinician offers grounded, ethical support for individuals and families navigating complexity, stress, and systems that don’t always operate as they should.

Unconventional Clinician exists to translate emerging research, clinical patterns, and systems-level insights into education, writing, speaking, and advocacy that challenge narrow or outdated models of behavioral health care. While the work is informed by clinical training and experience, Unconventional Clinician does not provide psychotherapy, diagnosis, crisis services, or individualized treatment. Clinical services are offered separately by Nikki Hammonds, LCSW, through her licensed clinical practice - Nikki Hammonds, LCSW, PLLC.

Important Note About Services

Because clinical therapy services and consulting services are different, each has its own webpage with detailed information on scope, eligibility, and next steps. This website describes both licensed psychotherapy services and non-clinical consulting, education, and advocacy services. These offerings are distinct and are provided under different professional roles, ethical standards, and legal frameworks.

Both types of services are offered separately, designed for different needs and delivered under clear professional boundaries. If you’re unsure which service fits your needs, the service descriptions below may help guide you. If you have additional questions, feel free to reach out and ask.

1. Psychotherapy (Clinical Services)

Individuals and families seeking support for mental health symptoms, emotional distress, or psychological treatment should pursue psychotherapy services. I provide evidence-based psychotherapy sessions focused on anxiety, depression, chronic stress, burnout, and complex life transitions.

Clinical services are:

  • Provided by Nikki Hammonds, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker for 20+ years
  • Governed by clinical and ethical standards
  • Delivered through scheduled virtual therapy sessions
  • Often covered by insurance
  • Subject to state licensure laws, confidentiality requirements (including HIPAA), and informed consent

You can learn more about clinical psychotherapy services at the link below.

Therapy Services

2. Consulting & Advisory Services (Non-Clinical)

Individuals, families, professionals, and organizations seeking education, systems-level consultation, professional guidance, advocacy support, or non-therapeutic coaching may be appropriate for consulting services. I offer consulting and advisory services through Unconventional Clinician, LLC. These are designed for professional education, systems consultation, caregiver guidance, policy or organizational support, and informational purposes.

Consulting, education & advocacy services are:

  • Provided by Unconventional Clinician, LLC
  • Non-clinical in nature
  • Cash-pay only (not covered by insurance)
  • Not psychotherapy or medical care
  • Designed for complex, cross-disciplinary challenges

You can learn more about my non-clinical consulting and advisory services at the link below.

Consulting Services

No Emergency or Crisis Services

This website does not provide emergency or crisis services. If you are experiencing a mental health emergency or are in danger of harming yourself or others, call 911, contact your local emergency department, or call the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.

By using this website, you acknowledge that you understand the distinction between psychotherapy and consulting services and agree to seek services appropriate to your needs.

A Personal Note

As a military spouse and the mother of children impacted by neuroimmune conditions that were repeatedly misunderstood within traditional healthcare models, I’ve experienced firsthand how families can be dismissed when symptoms don’t fit neatly into existing frameworks. That experience shapes my work at every level—from individual clinical care to professional consulting and systems-level advocacy—grounded in the belief that people deserve to be heard, believed, and supported...it's also why I'm especially attentive to complexity, context, and providing care that doesn't stop at surface explanations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Email me at UnconventionalClinician@pm.me if you have additional questions.

Insurance will not cover the cost of non-clinical consultations, coaching and trainings. I am not an In-Network provider with any insurers for clinical services at this time. If you have Out of Network benefits with your insurance company, I will be happy to provide you a detailed receipt for any reimbursable services so you can submit a request directly to your insurer.

Appointments for clinical services can be made on my clinical services page.

Here are questions you can ask your insurance company about your 'Out of Network' benefits:

  1. Does my health insurance plan include Out-of-Network mental health benefits?
  2. Do I have a deductible? If so, what is it and have I met it yet?
  3. Does my plan cover out of network telehealth for mental health?
  4. How do I submit therapy receipts to your company for reimbursement?

At this time, I offer online appointments only.

I am located in North Carolina, but currently providing all sessions via telehealth. This option provides you with a convenient and effective way to have appointments.

Due to state professional licensing laws, my clinical services are only available to individuals who are also located in North Carolina. Non-clinical consultations, coaching and trainings are available to individuals inside and outside of North Carolina.

I am an "Out of Network" provider for clinical therapy services. Those are offered through my clinical services page. If you have questions, you may contact me directly about fees for all clinical and/or non-clinical services at UnconventionalClinician@pm.me.

You have the right to receive a “Good Faith Estimate” explaining how much your medical care will cost.

Under the law, health care providers need to give patients who don’t have insurance or who are not using insurance an estimate of the bill for medical items and services.

• You have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate for the total expected cost of any non-emergency items or services. This includes related costs like medical tests, prescription drugs, equipment, and hospital fees.

• Make sure your health care provider gives you a Good Faith Estimate in writing at least 1 business day before your medical service or item. You can also ask your health care provider, and any other provider you choose, for a Good Faith Estimate before you schedule an item or service.

• If you receive a bill that is at least $400 more than your Good Faith Estimate, you can dispute the bill.

• Make sure to save a copy or picture of your Good Faith Estimate. For questions or more information about your right to a Good Faith Estimate, visit www.cms.gov/nosurprises or call 800-985-3059.
